The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) imposed a penalty of AED 20,000,000 on a branch of a foreign bank on 24 June 2026, pursuant to the Federal Decree Law Regarding the Central Bank and Organization of Financial Institutions and Activities. The penalty followed CBUAE examinations that found significant, repeated failures in the branch's AML/CFT and Sanctions framework. Interestingly, the liability did not stop at the Bank, and the CBUAE also imposed an individual penalty of AED 300,000 on the branch's Head of Compliance and Money Laundering Reporting Officer for failing to fulfill his responsibilities and position functions. Neither the bank nor the individual was named in the release.
